A.N.A.R.T.S. News Bulletin 1537 for 5th April 2009

On March 25, a group from AMSAT-DL bounced radio signals off the surface of Venus, marking the first time Amateur Radio operators have bounced radio signals off another planet. According to AMSAT-DL President Peter Guelzow, DB2OS, the Earth-Venus-Earth (EVE) transmission is another step in preparing for a mission to Mars. According to an AMSAT-DL press release, the team's transmitter was generating about 6 kW CW on 2.4 GHz.

Guelzow said that signals were sent from a ground control station at the IUZ Sternwarte observatory in Bochum: "After travelling almost 100 million kilometres and a round trip delay of about 5 minutes, they were clearly received as echoes from the surface of Venus. This was the first German success to receive echoes of other planets. In addition, this is the farthest distance crossed by radio amateurs, over 100 times further than echoes from the moon (EME reflections)."

one of the islands." Islands mentioned are Tanga Island (OC-102), Green Island

ROSKILDE 1658 AWARD STATIONS ACTIVITIES
The weekend of April 4-5th, look for stations that are involved "Roskilde 1658
Award". Details about this award was featured in the February 2009 issue of CQ
Magazine. Stations expected to be active are SB1658OZ, SH1658DK, SH1658OZ,
SK1658DK and the Danish wild card station OZ1658ROS. That is a total of five
qualifying callsigns active, but you only need four callsigns for the award. It
was also mentioned that due to a called district meeting arranged by SK7BQ
during the past weekend, the callsigns operated by SK7BQ, SC1658OZ and SK1658OZ
will not be active during the upcoming weekend. The five special callsigns will
mainly be active on 80, 40 and 20 meters, depending on conditions, using CW and
SSB. Stations SB1658OZ and SH1658OZ will also be active on PSK31. The press
release states, "We have noted in our logs that many award hunters work only CW
or RTTY/PSK31. You will be more successful if you work as many modes as
possible. Not all of our operators are able to work digital modes or CW." For
complete information on all callsigns, times in UTC and frequencies, please
visit the "Roskilde 1658 Award" Web page at:
http://www.sk7bq.com/roskilde (under "Activity calendar")

TC2, TURKEY (Lighthouse Activity)
Members of the Turkish group called TCSWAT (Special Wireless Activity Team) will
activate the last lighthouse in a series of historical lighthouses around
Istanbul next weekend. On April 4-5th, look for TC2FLH to be active from
Fenerbahce Lighthouse (TUR 021). Remember, you only need four or more contacts
with lighthouses to receive the "Istanbul Lighthouses On The Air Award" (ILOTA).
Details and rules can be found at:
http://www.ta0u.com/detay.asp?id=4296

VK9M, MELLISH REEF (Update)
Operators George/AA7JV and Tomi/HA7RY, were stuck on Marion Reef most of the
week but were able to reach Mellish Reef on March 27th and should be on the air
as VK9GMW by 0800z, March 28th. Activity should last about April 10th (this can
change). For updates, please visit the VK9GMW Web page at:
http://www.vk9gmw.com

YK, SYRIA
Saad, N5FF, informs OPDX that he will be arriving in Damascus on the evening of
March 29th and should be active again as YK1BA from March 30th and April 10th.
He will return home to Texas on April 11th. As usual, the purpose of the trip is
not a DXpedition, so his operating will be spotty, but he states that he will
try to put in as much radio time as possible. He suggests that his operating
hours will be between 2000-2300z or between 0200-0500z and possibly some
occasional activities between 1200-1400z. Saad says, "I suspect that 30, 40, and
80 meters will be the bands of choice, and I will be active on SSB, CW, and
RTTY." QSL via N5FF ((QRZ.com) for details).
