A.N.A.R.T.S. News Bulletin 1531 for 22nd February 2009
Bruce (G3HSR) reports (via VK2HV): It is with deep sadness that I inform you that Jim (VK9NS) passed peacefully away on Norfolk Island at 15:40 local time on 10 February 2009 after a short illness.
Jim is survived by his wife Kirsti (VK9NL) and his four children:
Bruce (G3HSR), Stuart, Sheena and Fraser (all living in the UK).
Jim's contribution to Amateur Radio, DX-ing and IOTA is inestimable. He will be sadly missed. Further information and condolences can be sent to Kirsti at jimkirsti@ni.net.nf
The Documentary Archive Radio Communication (DARC) Web page now provides on its
site "A Tribute to Jim B. Smith, VK9NS" at:
http://www.dokufunk.org/vk9ns
On the page there is a great collection of QSL cards from many of the DXCC
entities he activated.

ANARTS needs a Contest Manager
The ANARTS RTTY Contest may have to be discontinued if a Contest Manager cannot be found. The present incumbent cannot continue due to chronic illness, age and failing eyesight. Present activity of the group is restricted to the weekly bulletin and the yearly contest. All expenses can be met so there is no problem in that area.
If there is anyone out there who can help with the contest, please contact Pat VK2JPA. The email address is patleeper@optusnet.com.au

5C, MOROCCO (IOTA Op)
Alfredo, IK7JWX, informs that he is preparing for a DXpedition (with 9
operators) to activate Mogador Island (AF-065) in April. Activity will be on all
HF-VHF bands and all modes. Activity will be on all bands (HF-VHF) and modes (CW, SSB, RTTY PSK31). The group is looking for sponsors and donations. If you can help, please contact Alfredo, IK7JWX, via E-mail at: ik7jwx2003@yahoo.it
5X, UGANDA
Nick, G3RWF, will once again be active as 5X1NH. He will be in Fort Portal in
western Uganda starting March 11th for about two months. Nick informs OPDX that
he bought a (U.S.) vertical for 40 and 80 meters, so he feels that he will do a
bit better on those bands this time. However, he will not have a 160 meter
antenna (states, "there is simply not enough room for an antenna, unless I visit
my friend 5X1GS and use his antennas - which I might well do."). He also
mentions,
"I prefer CW but I have now worked over 20k CW QSOs, so I have it in mind to
work some data (RTTY and PSK31). Will work SSB whenever signals are good
enough." Look for Nick on the air mainly during
the early mornings, evenings and weekends. QSL via G3RWF.
ANTARCTIC ACTIVITY WEEK EVENT NEWS (February 16-22nd)
PLEASE REMEMBER - Stations that are active and signing "/ANT" may NOT be in the
Antarctic!
ANTARCTIC OP & CRUISE
By the time you read this, Mehdi/F5PFP and Jean- Pierre/ON7ZM should be getting
ready for their expedition to the Antarctic peninsula. Their sailboat is
expected to leave Ushuaia on Wednesday, February 18th, depending on the weather
conditions. They plan to visit several Antarctic bases which include the South
Shetland Islands (AN-010), Palmer Archipelago (AN-012) and the Antarctic
mainland (AN-016).
According to Mehdi, both Jean-Pierre and himself will mainly be active on 20
meters SSB (14315 kHz), with some activity on 40/30/17 meters. [90% on SSB, 10%
on CW, 80% on 20m] They plan to have one station continuously on the air with a
trapless vertical using 500 watts and another station sporadically active using
a trapless vertical and 100 watts. Operating times are between 1800-2200z,
earlier and later when it is possible. Callsigns mentioned are CE9XX, FT5YJ and
VP8DLM. Expedition will last through March 17th.

We have been informed by several sources that "the Andorran Radioamateurs Union

Recommendation T/R 61-01. Therefore any C3/homecall activity should be regarded
as illegal." An up-to-date list of licensed amateurs can be found at:
